THE VDZB GUIDELINE

Certified safety

The Association of the German Supply Industry for the Funeral Industry(VDZB) e.V. was formed on 1 January 2003 through the merger of the Federal Association of the German Coffin Industry (BVSI) e.V. and the Association of the German Funeral Laundry Industry (VDBI) e.V..

The "solid wood coffins" association of the VDZB, in which almost 50 manufacturers of solid wood coffins from all over Germany are organised, has defined high environmental protection requirements and quality standards for solid wood coffins for earth burial and cremation in equal measure.

This also includes requirements for the coating of coffin materials, which in turn include the provisions of VDI guideline 3891 "Emission reduction for cremation plants". In detail, coating materials must meet the following conditions according to the above-mentioned guideline:

Paintwork and coatings must be low in smoke during combustion. Top coats must be absolutely free of nitrocellulose. In the case of pigmented paint, the primer layers (e.g. scratch primer) must not contain more than 5% nitrocellulose in the solid. The overall structure should be normally flammable. Organic halogen and substances containing heavy metals shall not be used in the intended structure.
